Groupe SEB commits to addressing consumer concerns
Health and the environment are growing concerns for consumers who are showing increasing awareness.
At the launch of the cookware ranges equipped with new Intensium coating, Tefal commits to respecting the environment and reaffirming the safety of its products and non-stick coatings for the consumer.
Groupe SEB integrates respect for the environment throughout the product lifecycle. Thanks to its eco-design progamme, it improves the recyclability of its products, reduces their energy consumption, develops the use of recycled materials, etc.
All SEB Group French sites, and 78% of our international sites, comply with the environmental requirements of ISO standard 14001. For the most recent arrivals into the Group, entities which are not yet certified are aiming to be so by the end of 2012.
The Groupe carries out scientific studies with independent agencies which enable it to evaluate the exact environmental impacts of its business and products, particularly its non-stick frying pans.
Today the most thorough and internationally recognized method of analysis to carry out such studies is lifecycle assessment (LCA), a standardized method governed by ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards.
I can quantify the impacts of a product on the environment throughout its lifecycle and identify the stages that have most impact. It therefore provides a global overview resulting in a comprehensive ecological balance sheet. This study shows that Groupe SEB’s non-stick frying pans have a low environmental impact.
TEFAL products comply with the strictest standards in terms of public health: European Directives 1935/2004, Food and Drug Administration- CFR 21.177.1550. Moreover, the French, European and American health authorities have approved the use of non-stick coatings for cooking utensils for more than 50 years.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylène) is found in most non-stick coatings. PTFE is an inert substance which produces no reaction in contact with foodstuffs, water or domestic cleaing products. Even when the coating is worn, it does not constitute any health risk. Finaly, ingesting PTFE particles if the coating is scratched or damages does not present any risk: thess particles are not assimilated by the body and remain perfectly inoffensive. For proof, PTF is also used in the medical sector for example as a coating for cardiac simulators, to replace arteries or to coast prostheses.
Non-stick cookware manufactured by Groupe SEB does not contain PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), a compound which is sued in the manufacturing process of many products. Tees are regularly carried out on Groupe SEB products by independent laboratories throughout the world, such as MB Labs in Cana and SGS in China.
Moreover, to ensure food is cooked safely, the temperature of cooking utensils must not exceed 230°C. That is why Tefal non-stick products often have an exclusive heat indicator Thermo-Spot which warn you when the ideal cooking temperature 180°C is reached.
Groupe SEB’s have an exclusively designed base. It ensures that heat is diffused and controlled better and guarantees the temperature is evenly distributed. Food is therefore cooked uniformly every single time.
